  • I've heard that you should never date anyone who is less than half your age plus seven. Tom is now 30 years old and Mary is 17. How many years will Tom need to wait until he can start dating Mary?

  • I've received many questions from students asking about choices and methods of reading. My answers have never led to anything productive. I think it's not dissimilar to asking what kind of person you should love or which kind of love you should have.
  • I have often been questioned by students about how to choose books and how to read them. I could never reply to these questions but in vague terms. I feel it is not so different from being asked what kind of person one should love or what kind of love one should have.

  • If someone who doesn't know your background says that you sound like a native speaker, it means they probably noticed something about your speaking that made them realize you weren't a native speaker. In other words, you don't really sound like a native speaker.

  • I spent that day listening to the lonely scrapings of a pen. During that time, from time to time, I heard a Java sparrow twittering. It occurred to me that maybe Java sparrows twitter out of loneliness too. I walked out to the veranda to see. Nevertheless, flying to and fro between two perches busily and incessantly, it did not show the slightest hint of grievance.

  • "Do you know what kind of tree you just broke?" "No, I don't," I answered the detective. While looking through the open door, the detective shouted, "Hey, do you know what kind of tree he just broke?" "Um, looks like it's a yew plum pine," said the voice of a young woman. After straightening himself in his seat, the detective asked me one more time: "Do you know what kind of tree you just broke?"

  • Today, the managing director came in carrying a computer. Well, I was surprised and asked, "Can I help you with anything?", and he said, "My computer stopped working, so I called, but Tanaka told me to bring it up to the 4th floor, so here I am." Everyone turned pale. Well, needless to say, our boss gave Tanaka a real going-over. It couldn't be helped. It could've been any one of us though, so I thought, "I better be careful."
